Novita to Reach Carbon Neutrality 2020
Novita is a climate pioneer in the textile business. ”We take our corporate responsibility seriously and want to be in the forefront of climate issues, says CEO Daniela Yrjö-Koskinen”. Novita has set a target to reach carbon neutrality across the company in 2020.
In order to establish a starting point, Novita’s carbon footprint was first calculated by Sari Siitonen from Clonet. The calculations covered all the CO2 emissions within Novita’s control, e.g. emissions from inhouse energy production, transportation, business travel, purchased energy and waste. The footprint in 2018 was calculated to 607 tons, an exceptionally small figure in regard to the size and scale of Novita’s business.
The calculations were made using GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, the most widely-used standard for calculating carbon emissions of corporations
Actions across the company
Novita works with carbon reductions in numerous ways. By using certified electricity, reusing generated heat minimizing waste and maximizing recycyling, we’re taking continuous steps towards carbon neutrality.
Novita purchases all its raw materials, such as wool and packaging materials, from nearby regions. Our factory uses EKO-labeled electricity, which is produced by wind power. Biogas is used in the finalizing processes at the factory. The biogas is a domestic fuel made entirely from renewable sources.
Yarn production requires a lot of energy and water. We’re able to collect the heat generated in the dyeing process and reuse it to heat the following dyeing lots. This way we can lessen our environmental impact.
All the chemicals used in the yarn productions process are REACH-compliant. We always try to choose dyes and other chemicals that are biodegradable and harmless e.g. to people with allergic conditions.
Since we shifted to EKOenergy-certified, windpower electricity at the factory, we’ve managed to cut our carbon footprint by one third. We compensate the remaining emissions through carbon offsets. In the longer term Novita’s goal is to use only recyclable or renewable raw materials, including packing materials, by 2030.
