Using Chart II Part 1:
Inc row (WS): Work from A to B 3(4, 5, 6, 7, 9) times = 12[16:20:24:28:36] sts, from B to C once = [37sts + 4sts], from C to D once = [13]sts.
Continue in pattern repeating rows 1 to 12 until 45[46:47:48:50:51] cm have been worked, ending on a WS row.
Cast off 6 sts for facing, start collar inc, Chart II, Part 2, row 13, (you already have 1st stitch from chart on your right hand needle after dec 6 sts, so begin from 2nd st). As indicated in the patt (rows 14-47) inc 1 st every other row 10 times and every 4th row 4 times. After completing row 47 you will have 33sts for the collar. AT THE SAME TIME, when work meas 47[48:49:50:52:53] cm from cast on rib, shape armholes.
Keeping pattern correct work decreases from armhole edge as follows (for right front decreases will be worked on reverse side, for left front decreases will be worked on right side):
Cast off 4[4:5:5:6:7] sts pattern to end.
Work one row in pattern.
Cast off 3 sts 0(0, 1, 1, 1, 1) time, pattern to end.
Work 0(0, 1, 1, 1, 1) row in pattern.
Cast off 2 sts on next and every alternate row 1(2, 1, 2, 3, 3) time(s).
Cast off 1 st on next and every alternate row 3(3, 3, 3, 2, 3) time(s).
Continue in patt until armhole meas 21[22:23:24:24:25] cm.
From armhole edge cast off remaining 29[31:33:35:37:43] sts for shoulder and slip 36sts onto a holder for the collar.
Mark button placements with stitchmarkers as follows, top button: 1cm bellow start of collar shaping, bottom button: 2.5cm above hem, space the rest of the buttons evenly in between.
Work as for right front reversing pattern order and shaping.
To Make Buttonholes: make buttonholes to match the intervals marked on the right front:
(RS): work in pattern until you have 10sts left, yrn, work 2 tog (this makes buttonhole), work 5 sts in pattern, yrn, work 2 tog, K1(this makes corresponding hole in the facing (strengthening rib) which is sewn down later.
When casting off 6 sts for facing, do this on a WS row. Start collar shaping on next RS row using Chart II, Part 2, Row 13, remembering you will be working the chart from left to right this time (or you can follow the ‘Chart II, Part 2, Left Front - Written Instructions'). Use a stitch marker to indicate where Chart II, Part 2 begins.
Using 4.5mm needles cast on 49 [49: 57:57: 57: 65] sts.
Row 1 Rib (WS): K1, (P1, K1) to end.
Row 2 Rib (RS): P1, (K1, P1) to end.
Rows 1 and 2 set rib.
Continue in rib until sleeve measures 7cm, ending with a right side row.
Change to 5mm needles.
Inc Row (WS): Using Chart III, work as follows: Repeat from A to B 4 (4, 5, 5, 5, 6) times = 16 [16:20:20:20:24] sts, from B to C once [17sts + 1 increased st = 18sts], from C to D 4 (4:5:5:5:6) times = 16 [16:20:20:20:24] sts. 50[50: 58:58:58:66]sts in total.
Continue in Patt repeating rows 1-12 until sleeve measures 12 [8:13:10:14:8) cm. Inc 1 st at each end of next row. Repeat increases at 2.5[2.5: 2.5: 2.5: 2: 2.5] cm intervals 14 (16, 14, 16, 18, 17) times, 80 [84:88:92:96:102] sts, working increases into pattern.
Continue in pattern until sleeve measures 49 [50:51:52:52:53] cms.
Cast off 4 [5: 5: 6: 6: 7]sts at beg of next 2 rows. 72[74:78:80:84:88]sts.
Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 66[68:72:74:78:82]sts.
Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 4 rows. 58[60:64:66:70:74]sts.
Dec 1 sts at each end of next and every row 12(13, 14, 15, 16, 17) times, 34[34:36:36:38:40]sts.
Cast off 2 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows, 30[30:32:32:34:36]sts.
Cast off 3 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows 24[24:26:26:28:30]sts.
Cast off rem sts.
Left front:
Slip 36sts stitches for left front collar onto a 5mm needle, M1 into shoulder edge (this will be used for sewing to back of neck later) = 37sts.
Work in rib for 2cm.
Start shortened rows:
Row 1: (WS) Front Edge: Work 27sts in rib. Turn work.
Row 2: Work 27sts in rib. Turn work.
Row 3: Work 31sts in rib. Turn work.
Row 4: Work 31sts in rib. Turn work.
Rows 5-10: Work all 37sts in rib pattern.
Repeat these 10 rows until the neck side of the collar reaches half way across the back of the neck when pulled slightly.
When confident it is long enough, cast off.
Right Front:
Repeat as for left collar, reversing all shapings.
Block pieces. Join shoulder seams. Fold sleeves in half lengthways, placing the fold to the shoulder seams, sew sleeves in position. Join sides and sleeve seams. Sew facings behind the front borders. Sew ends of the collar pieces together, then sew the collar to the back of the neck. Finally sew on the buttons.
Rib:
Row 1: K1,*P1,K1, rep from* to end.
Row 2: P1, *K1,P1, rep from * to end.
Cable pattern: See chart.

22 sts and 27 rows to 10 cm measured over cable patt.
Using 4.5mm needles cast on 105[113:121:129:137:153] sts and work rib as follows.
Row 1 Rib (WS): K1, *P1, K1, rep from * to end.
Row 2 Rib: P1, *K1, P1, rep from * to end.
These 2 rows form rib. Continue in rib until back measures 7cm, ending with a right side row.
Change to 5mm needles.
Working from Chart I, continue as follows:
Inc Row (WS): Work from A to B 3(4, 5, 6, 7, 9) times = 12[16:20:24:28:36] sts, from B to C once = [34 sts + 4 sts], from C to D three times = [12 sts], from D to E once = [35 sts + 4 sts] and from E to F 3(4, 5, 6, 7, 9) times = 12[16:20:24:28:36] sts. 113[121:129:137:145:161] sts in total.
Continue in pattern repeating rows 1 to 12 until back measures 47[48:49:50:52:53] cm.
Keeping pattern correct, cast off 4[4:5:5:6:7] sts at the beg of the next 2 rows.
Cast off 3 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows 0(0, 1, 1, 1, 1) times.
Cast off 2sts at the beg of the next 2(4, 2, 4, 6, 6) rows.
Cast off 1 st at the beg of the next 6(6, 6, 6, 4, 6) rows, 95[99:103:107:111:123] sts.
Continue in pattern until armhole measures 19[20:21:22:22:23] cm.
Next Row (RS): Keeping patt correct, cast off 33 sts in the middle of the Back for the neck and knit in patt to end. Leave right hand shoulder sts on a holder.
Dec 1 st at the neck edge on each of the next 2 rows, 29[31:33:35:37:43] sts.
Cont to work in patt until armhole measures 21[22:23:24:24:25] cm. Cast off rem 29[31:33:35:37:43] sts.
Re-join yarn to sts on holder and pattern to end. Complete to match first side, reversing all shapings.
Cast on 62[66:70:74:78:86] sts.
Row 1 Rib (WS): K1, *P1, K1 rep from * until 13sts rem. P1, (K1, P1) 3 times, K6.
Row 2 Rib: K13, (P1, K1) rep to last st, P1.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until front measures 7cm ending with a right side row.
Have you just learned to knit, maybe still trying to figure out the very basics like knit and purl stitches? Or are you picking up knitting again for the first time since elementary school? Start here.
Beginner-level patterns include only basic knitting techniques: knitting and purling. You’ll also need to cast on and cast off stitches. The projects can be worked flat or in the round. Easy, regular decreases are used. Most patterns are worked in stockinette or garter stitch. Other simple stitch patterns may occur, and they are always detailed in the written pattern. Stripes of different colours may be used, but no more advanced colourwork.
All patterns are written and do not include charts. Abbreviations are not used. Getting gauge is not crucial to the finished piece. Patterns include mostly accessories such as scarved and beanies. Pillowcases and other home decoration pieces.
Got the basics covered? You’d like to take a swing at your first pair of socks, perhaps some easy cables or colourwork? A treasure of patterns awaits you on this level.
Patterns on this level may include simple colourwork, cables or lace. Colourwork patterns repeats are relatively short, cables simple and symmetrical and lace patterns easy and relatively small, covering details rather than entire pieces. The colourwork, cable and lace stitches are not worked into decreases or increases. Colourwork yarn floats are short, max. 3-4 stitches. Picking up stitches may occur. On this level, you’ll also find easy patterns using domino knitting, log cabin knitting or tunisian crochet.
Patterns may include simple charts. In case special techniques are employed, they are detailed our in the instructions, either as text or e.g. through videos. The patterns may also suggest ”shortcuts”, i.e. easier ways to accomplish a technique. Most of the basic socks with heel flaps or afterthought heels are on this level, as well as mittens with no-gusset thumbs. There’s also plenty of sweaters, usually yoke sweaters or raglan sleeve sweaters.
So knitting is a regular hobby for you? Abbreviations, charts and instructions are no more than a walk in the park? Perhaps you’re looking for something to challenge yourself with, even at the odds of frogging?
In addition to basic techniques, some special techniques may be employed on this level, e.g. short rows. The same pattern may include both lace and cables. Magic loop knitting or entrelac, two-coloured brioche stitch, also here. In general, patterns require a more advanced ability to "read" your knitting. Lace patterns are also more advanced than on the previous level, but the lace stitches are still worked on right side only. Intarsia may be included, but in relatively simple and symmetrical patterns.
Patterns on this level can feature concurrent shaping, e.g. neckline shaping at the same time as sleeve decreases or sleeve decreases into cable pattern. Sweater sleeves may require more advanced shaping. Most of our sweaters are at this level. Other patterns include e.g. magic loop patterns and toe-up socks.
Turn off that telly and lash the doors, maximum concetration required! Although this skill level doesn’t bring much more in terms of technique, there’s simply more going on at the same time. Skill, concentration and perception are requisite.
On this level, you’ll find more advanced intarsia patterns, including intarsia in the round. Brioche patterns with decreases and/or cables are also here. Beginning of rounds may shift and multiple markers are needed. Lace or cable stitches may be worked also from wrong side. We’ve also included patterns featuring steeks here. Steeking isn’t hard as such, but requires the nerves and confidence of an experienced knitter.
Patterns may include complex steps and require simultaneous reading of both charts and written instructions. Gauge may vary over different steps of the project. The patterns often feature much details and a combination of techniques. The size of the project is not what determines whether it’s advanced or not; focus is on technique, overall complexity and the risk of errors during the project.
Every pattern is based on a certain gauge, expressed as stitches or rows per 10 cm. It is important that you make a swatch to check your gauge before you start the actual project. If your gauge doesn’t match the pattern’s gauge, your finished garment won’t be the correct size either.
Swatching Start by knitting a swatch. Use the yarn, the needles and the stitch pattern you intend to use in the project. Make the swatch a little wider than 10 cm, so that you’ll be able to measure the stitches properly. Block the swatch by pinning it to a surface, then steam it gently. Count the stitches; put a pin in a stitch, then measure 10 cm from that stitch and put another pin there. Count the stitches from pin to pin – that’s your gauge! If needed, measure both horizontal and vertical gauge (rows). If you’re measuring rib or brioche stitches, stretch out the swatch slightly before measuring.
If your gauge doesn’t match the pattern gauge, you can adjust it by switching needle size. If your swatch has too few stitches per 10 cm (i.e. your knitting is too loose), switch to smaller needles. Conversely, if your swatch has too many stitches per 10 cm, your knitting is too tight and you’ll need a larger pair of needles. Always knit another swatch in order to determine proper gauge and sizing. Also note that the pattern yardage only applies to the pattern yarn, the yardage may differ if you choose another yarn.
