Using Apple Blossom cast on 70 sts and divide them onto four double-pointed needles: 16, 19, 18 and 17 sts. The beginning of the round is between needles I and IV. Work 12 rounds of twisted ribbing.

Begin the colourwork pattern on row 1 of the chart. Work the 10 st pattern 7 times. Work rows 2–10 of the chart, repeat rows 1–10 three more times, then work rows 1–8 once more. Place e.g. a different-coloured piece of yarn at the beginning of round. Break the Oat yarn and continue with Apple Blossom.

Begin the heel flap: knit the sts on needle I onto needle IV = 33 sts. Leave the other sts on hold. Turn work, slip 1 with yarn in back, p32.

Begin the reinforced st pattern:

Row 1: (RS) slip the first 2 sts with yarn in back, k1, *slip 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat *–* to end of row. Turn work.

Row 2: slip 1 with yarn in back, purl to end. Turn work.

Repeat rows 1–2 a total of 16 times (32 rows).

Begin the French heel turn:

Row 1: (RS) k21, skp (= slip 1 knitwise, k1, pass the slipped st over), k1. Turn work.

Row 2: (WS) slip 1, p10, p2tog, p1, turn work.

Row 3: slip 1 knitwise, k11, skp, k1, turn work.

Row 4: slip 1, p12, p2tog, p1, turn work.

Row 5: slip 1 knitwise, k13, skp, k1, turn work.

Continue in this manner until you have decreased at the very edges on both sides of the work. 21 sts on the needles. Turn work. Knit the RS row.

Using the main colour and the needle with 21 sts, pick up 19 sts from the left end of the heel flap. On needles II and III resume the colourwork pattern on row 9 of the chart. Using a free needle pick up 19 sts from the other end of the heel flap: *2 sts with the main colour (MC), 1 st with the contrasting colour (CC)*, repeat *–* 5 more times and pick up 1 st with MC. Knit sts from the heel flap onto the same needle: 1 st with MC, *1 st with CC, 2 sts with MC*, repeat *–* 2 more times. 96 sts on the needles: 30 sts needle I + 19 sts needle II + 18 sts needle III + 29 sts needle IV.

Continue the colourwork pattern and at the same time begin the gusset decreases between needles I and IV (middle of sole): on needle I work *1 st CC, 2 sts MC*, repeat *–* 9 more times. On needles II and III follow the chart. On needle IV work *2 sts MC, 1 st CC*, repeat *–* 9 more times. Gusset decrease: move last st on needle IV onto needle I, slip 2 sts knitwise as to k2tog, work next st with CC and pass the slipped sts over.

On needles I and IV work the MC sts with MC and CC sts with CC (use CC throughout for the 1 st at the beginning of round, i.e. middle of sole). Follow the chart on needles II and III. Work 1 round even, then repeat the gusset decrease at the end of the next round. Work the decrease on every other round until there are 35 sts in total on needles I and IV.

When the sole measures approx. 18,5 cm from the midpoint of the heel flap, work 1 more round of colourwork, decreasing 1 st at both edges of the instep: work needle I, k1, skp on at the beginning of needle II, work to last 3 sts on needle III, then k2tog, k1 and work needle IV. 70 sts on the needles. Break off CC and knit 1 round with MC. Work stockinette st for the rest of the piece.

Begin the toe decreases: k2tog, k1 at the end of needles I and III, and k1, skp at the beginning of needles II and IV. Work the decreases on every other round until there are 42 sts in total. Then decrease on every round until there are 22 sts in total. Work the next round until you reach the edge of the instep.

Divide the sts onto two needles, 11 sts on the sole, 11 sts on the instep. Use Kitchener stitch to graft the toe.

Place the needles so that the sts are on top of each other and the working yarn is coming from the sole needle. Thread a yarn needle and insert it through the st on the front needle as to purl, then insert it through the st on the back needle as to knit. Tighten.

1. Take the needle and yarn through the same st on the front needle as to knit, then slip the st off the needle.

2. Take the needle through the next st on the front needle as to purl. Draw the yarn through, leaving the st on the needle.

3. Take the needle and yarn through the back st (same one as before) as to purl, slip st off needle.

4. Take the needle through the next st on the back needle as to knit. Draw the yarn through, leaving the st on the needle. Keep repeating 1–4 until 1 st remains. Take the needle and yarn to the WS and weave in.

Knit the other sock in the same manner.

Finishing

Lightly steam the socks.
